Not a single nail was used during the Chi Lin Nunnery’s construction. The elegant nunnery was built according to Tang Dynasty architectural techniques, relying on wooden dowels and brackets instead.
The entrance to the nunnery is through the Sam Mun (“three gates”) celebrating 3 aspects of Buddhist teachings; compassion, wisdom and skillful means. Within the complex, visitors can walk through 2 enchanting court yards and visit several religious halls.
In the first courtyard, marvel at the colourful and pretty lotus flowers resting in the 4 ponds alongside natural bonsai trees and interesting rockeries.
Behind the ponds is the impressive Hall of Celestial Kings. Within the hall is a statue of the future Buddha, Maitreya Bodhisattva. Maitreya is believed to be the successor of Sakyamuni, the father of Buddhism. Maitreya’s shrine is accompanied by images of the Celestial Kings, known as the guardian gods of Buddha’s teaching.
Moving onto the second courtyard, you’ll find the imposing Main Hall honoring Sakyamuni, as well as other halls dedicated to various Bodhisattvas including Bhaisajyaguru, the medicine Buddha and Kwun Yum, the Goddess of mercy.
