Set amongst the dramatic landscape of HK’s south side, the Dragon’s Back really is one of the city’s best hikes. As it’s name suggests, the imposing mountain ridges resemble the back of a dragon.
Start the trek from Shek O road and follow the trail signs towards the Dragon’s Back. You'll have to climb up stairs before you reach the 284m high sighseeing platform. Here you can marvel at panoramic views of the South China Sea’s glistening water. Dozing gracefully by the shore are the striking Shek O and Big Wave Bay beaches. On a clear day, you can even spot the rugged Tung Lung Island in the distance.
Carry forward on the trail until reaching the intersection on Pottinger Gap, continue walking along the shaded Pottinger Peak Country Trail until the finishing point.
The hike ends close by Big Wave Bay where you can unwind on the soft sand or take a swim in the refreshing water. As it's name suggests, Big Wave Bay is a great place for surfing and you can rent surfboards there. Alternatively keep walking down Shek O road and venture to Shek O beach for calmer seas and mouthwatering food at a neighbourhood cafe.
